[開箱] NEVO Smartwatch Unboxing **Updated**

Last November I pledge an "Analog Smartwatch" on Indiegogo. Different from the smartwatches we are familar with, this watch looks just like a classic watch with hours and minutes hands.  What makes it smart is it it connects with a smartphone and vibrates when you get notifications. It also has a step counter feature with a glance-able progress indicator. In short, it is much like the Withings Activité but way cheaper.

Here's some first impressions:
* Updated 5/8/2015 GMT+8
  • It runs on two batteries. One for time keeping (364 Cell) which claims to last for 5 years (yes, five) and the other (CR2025) for smart features that claims to work for 6 months of normal usage. Both types of batteries are very common and the included toolkit should make changing batteries fairly simple.
  • It looks like a normal watch.
  • Quite cheap, lucky enough to spot this product during "early bird" pledge.
  • I bought the Shanghai model with "Gold" watch body and "Blueberry Blue" leather straps. The gold body is pretty well built, texture much like a gold iPhone. The blueberry blue strap has a "blacker" than expected color, but the leather quality is superb. Slightly too thick but acceptable since you know its fine leather.
  • Swapping the leather strap with a fabric strap for sporting uses is a smart design. However the execution was not quite as good as expected. First of all, the pins for the leather straps are builtin while the pins for the fabric straps are stand alone. It is quite easy to remove the leather strap but not that smooth when installing it. The main reason being the quick release button on the pin is extremely small and I have relatively big hands. To install the fabric strap, one must install 2 stand alone pins onto the watch first, and then strap on the fabric strap with a specific, but quite cleverly designed pattern. In short, you must find somewhere to store the pins for the fabric strap and also be very cautious when swapping between the straps. This procedure is not quite a convenient as advertised, but come to think of it, Nevo only advertise how quickly and easily it is to "remove" the leather strap with a gif.
  • Packaging is fairly stylish and secure enough for the product for oversea shipping.
  • Although there was 1 whole months of delay (expected to ship in March 2015, received on May 7th 2015 in Taiwan), the team did constantly update us with details and as long as the reasons are regarding product quality, I am fine with it. And honestly, 1 month of delay for Indiegogo products is considered extremely good.
  • *The holes on the leather strap just missed my gf's wrist size. The last hole is slightly too tight and the second to last hole is slightly too loose. I think after some time the leather should soften and she will be able to use the last hole more comfortably. At the moment she is wearing it second to last hole and seems quite comfortable. Actually the feel is much better and lighter than what I expect. I thought that a 12.6mm thickness will be quite bulky for her, but after wearing it for a day, it doesn't feel that heavy or bulky, at least not as heavy/bulky as imagined.
  • *The vibration on the watch is a too subtle. Since currently the watch is being worn on the second to last hole on the strap, the vibration feeling is close to none when in motion. It would be nice to have a configuration on this but I think there is hardware limitation to it. Hopefully this issue will become a non issue once the leather strap soften.
  • *The step tracking is way too sensitive. Wearing for less than 2 hours (8am to 9:30am), the App shows 700 steps. During this time, the routine was: Get up from bed and get ready for work. Put on the watch and leave the house. Ride 5 minutes of motorcycle to work. Park the bike and walk 5~10minutes. Wander around during work. This routine definitely does not have 700 steps. I think 300 steps is a bit more reasonable. I suspect the vibration during that 5 minutes of motorcycling contributes a large number false positive data.
The iOS App for this product is fairly simple, as in plain. It almost looks like a beta App but it works. There's not much to configure besides alarm, step counter goals, notification types and respective LED colors. In addition the third party text notifications only supports Facebook and WeChat. I really hope they add Line into their support list.

I just got it so can't really review it. Here's some unboxing photos, request for closeups are welcome:

  1. Hi,

    Thanks for the almost-review, I'm waiting for mine to arrive to Europe, hoping for the end of May though (contributed in April, so I'll wait patiently).

    One question: Is your wrist small (like on the last photo)? Because I've also got rather small arms and would like to know how does it feel on small hands. Is it comfortable? Not too heavy?

    Cheers.
